Group Therapy

About Our Group Therapy in Sarasota

Group therapy provides an opportunity to work through personal challenges alongside others who may be navigating similar experiences. Led by a licensed mental health professional, groups offer a supportive and structured environment where participants can share, listen, learn new perspectives, and develop practical tools for improving their emotional well-being.

At Sarasota Mental Health, our group therapy offerings are developed based on the needs of our clients and the Sarasota community. Group availability changes throughout the year, and not every group listed below is offered at all times. If you are interested in an upcoming group, we encourage you to contact us so we can learn more about what you are looking for and notify you when an appropriate group becomes available.

Our Offerings For Group Therapy in Sarasota

Connect, grow, and work through challenges alongside others who understand. Group availability may vary throughout the year, so contact us to learn more or express interest in any of the groups below.

Women's Support Group

Women often carry multiple roles and responsibilities at once, balancing relationships, family, careers, caregiving, personal expectations, and the pressure to keep everything moving. Over time, those demands can contribute to chronic stress, anxiety, emotional exhaustion, self-doubt, relationship difficulties, and a feeling of losing connection with yourself. Our women's therapy groups are designed to create a comfortable and supportive environment where women can talk openly about the challenges they are experiencing while connecting with others who may be facing similar circumstances.

Substance Abuse Support Group

Recovery from substance abuse or addiction can feel difficult and isolating, especially without a strong support system. Our substance abuse and addiction groups provide a professionally guided environment where participants can discuss challenges, recognize triggers and patterns, develop healthier coping strategies, strengthen accountability, and connect with others working toward similar goals. These groups are designed as an additional source of therapeutic support and are not an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), detoxification program, or residential treatment program.

Anxiety & Stress Management Group

Anxiety and ongoing stress can affect nearly every part of life, from relationships and work to sleep, concentration, confidence, and overall well-being. Our anxiety and stress management groups provide a supportive environment where participants can better understand the patterns contributing to worry and overwhelm while developing practical tools for managing them. Through professional guidance, group members can explore healthier coping strategies, improve emotional regulation, gain new perspectives, and feel less alone in the challenges they are facing.

Grief & Loss Support Group

Grief can be deeply personal, but navigating loss does not have to be an isolating experience. Our grief and loss support groups provide a compassionate setting where participants can process difficult emotions, adjust to changes in their lives, and connect with others who understand the complexities of loss. With the guidance of a licensed therapist, group members can explore healthy ways to cope, find support during difficult periods, and move forward at their own pace without the expectation that grief should follow a particular timeline.

Group Therapy FAQs

Learn what to expect from group therapy, how sessions work, and whether joining a group may be the right fit for your needs.
?

How does group therapy work?

Group therapy brings together a small number of participants with a licensed therapist who guides the discussion and helps create a supportive, structured environment. Depending on the group, sessions may run for a set number of weeks or continue on an ongoing basis, with meeting frequency, session length, and group size varying by program. Before joining, you may speak with one of our therapists to determine whether the group is a good fit for your needs.

?

Is group therapy confidential?

Confidentiality is an important part of creating a safe and respectful group environment. Our therapists follow professional and legal confidentiality standards, and participants are expected to respect the privacy of other group members by keeping personal information and discussions within the group. Because other participants are involved, confidentiality cannot be guaranteed in exactly the same way as it can during individual therapy, which is why expectations are discussed clearly before the group begins.

?

Is group therapy right for me?

Group therapy can be a good fit for people who want to connect with others facing similar challenges while gaining new perspectives, support, and practical coping strategies. Some people find that hearing the experiences of others helps them feel less isolated and more comfortable working through their own concerns. Your individual needs, goals, and circumstances will help determine whether group therapy, individual therapy, or another form of care is most appropriate.

?

Can I attend both individual therapy and group therapy?

Yes. Many clients participate in both individual and group therapy because the two can provide different but complementary forms of support. Individual therapy gives you dedicated time to focus on your personal experiences and goals, while group therapy adds connection, shared experiences, interpersonal learning, and support from others navigating similar challenges.
?

Are group therapy sessions currently available?

Our group offerings change throughout the year based on therapist availability, client interest, and the needs of the community, so not every group listed on this page will be available at all times. If you are interested in a particular group, we encourage you to contact Sarasota Mental Health so we can learn more about what you are looking for and let you know when an appropriate group becomes available. Expressing interest does not obligate you to participate.

Licensed & Experienced Therapists

Our therapists are licensed mental health professionals who bring clinical experience, advanced training, and their own areas of specialization to the therapeutic process. That combination helps ensure care is grounded in professional standards while still allowing each therapist to bring their own strengths and perspective to the work.

Personalized, Client-Focused Care

We do not believe therapy should feel rushed, standardized, or built around a one-size-fits-all process. Your goals, concerns, personality, and pace all matter, and your therapist works with you to shape an approach that feels appropriate for what you are actually trying to address.

In-Person & Virtual Options

Our Sarasota office provides a private, comfortable setting where clients can step away from everyday distractions and focus more fully on the therapeutic process. Virtual sessions are also available when needed, giving clients additional flexibility while still maintaining continuity of care.
